The factor of post cinema can be seen in not only films or television shows but also in music clips as well. Especially during the era of MTV and after. “While music video’s main influence on cinematic media has been an increasing musicalization of the visual, its main influence on social media, conversely, has been an increasing visualization of music.” (Korsgaard, 2017) The clips of Massive Attack, Michael Jackson, Queen and Bob Dylan contains lots of visual effects, post continuity editing and other kinds of post cinematic features. “Again, this influence of visualization can be thought to stem from factors other than just music video, including cinema, television, the aforementioned music video precursors and different kinds of new media.” (Korsgaard, 2017)
Adele’s clip of “Rolling in the Deep” can be an example for the post cinematic features in the music video. The editing of the clip of “Rolling in the Deep” is actually very simple. Adele is singing in a room, a person dancing with a sword, a guy playing the drums, lots of glasses filled with water and a miniature city on a table. But with the editing, it can be seen that those factors are ordered by the rhythm of the song. When the emotions of Adele, while singing, get higher, so does the intensity of the dance, the beats of the drum and the fire on the miniature city.
Especially in the last minute of the clip, the effect of post cinematic editing reveals itself clearly, where everything starts to fall apart and the rhythm of the music gets higher. The editing is well done and in a cinematic style. The last minute frankly shows how cinematic features can be used in a 4-minute music video. So, Adele’s clip of “Rolling in the Deep” can be counted as a good example for the post cinematic features in a music video.
