Chaos Cinema in Action Sequences

“New forms and new technical devices imply new possibilities of expression.” (Denson and Leyda, 2016) The shift from traditional film to digital cinema involves discussions on the change in realism and emergence of new image techniques. New cinematic approaches are evolving, such as intensified continuity and post-continuity, challenging classical editing rules. The emergence of a new academic critique challenges traditional linear narrative in popular media. It emphasizes digital effects as non-narrative experiments in sensation and perception, focusing on supra-narrative elements for alternative sensory engagement. In post-continuity films, continuity rules are applied opportunistically rather than being crucial, resulting in narratives articulated within non-classical space and time. Recent action blockbusters prioritize shock value through shaky cameras, extreme angles, digital effects, and rapid cuts instead of clear depiction of time and space in action sequences, “undermining it” (Shaviro, 2010). Filmmakers have refined their craft over the years to make cuts less noticeable. Techniques such as match-action editing and intensified continuity aim to create a seamless space and time, stimulating involuntary responses in viewers. Additionally, classical Hollywood filmmaking relies on continuity editing for narrative clarity, emotional cues, and a sense of anticipation. Post-continuity encompasses diverse interests, commitments, and aesthetic values similar to other stylistic norms. Giving “Gray Man” (Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, 2022) as an example, the film contains a combination of intensified continuity techniques, including rapid editing and use of extreme, unrealistic angles, challenging traditional narrative of cinema. In the action sequence which takes place on the plane, there are cuts between two unconnected angles, showing two different actions happening simultaneously, creating intensity to the sequence.

The angles which they use are also unconnected, which adds on to the overall sense of chaos cinema. Although there are elements of continuity editing present in “Grey Man”, the film breaks away from traditional narrative conventions especially during action sequences, emphasizing intensity and speed of the action sequences, presenting chaos cinema to the audience.
