Transgender representation on new digital channels

The rise of new digital platforms has opened up a world of representation possibilities, particularly for transgender people. “Trans TV” is one such platform which aims to provide transgender voices and stories to be heard. While this effort has immense potential, it is not without its challenges. Netflix is currently an important part of TV IV, but it is hardly the only one. Nevertheless, Netflix’ usage of binge-watching and its specific location in discourses of transnational broadcasting are a significant part of this process (Jenner, 2018).

In the hit Netflix series, The Umbrella Academy, one character stands out as a groundbreaking example of representation on new digital platforms: ‘Trans Tv’. Played by actor Elliot Page, ‘Victor Hargreeves’ is a transgender superhero who challenges traditional gender norms and brings much-needed diversity to the superhero genre. This representation has the ability to break down barriers and pave the path for more diverse narrative in subsequent seasons. Current shows that represent the trans community have been working to undo these false narratives, focusing more on their personal journeys and their gender in more nuanced, meaningful ways (Hernandez 2022).

While “Trans TV” allows transgender people to share their stories and experiences, raising visibility and knowledge, it can also develop empathy and acceptance among viewers who may have had limited exposure to the transgender community. Additionally, it enables trans people to reclaim their own narratives, thereby countering negative preconceptions imposed by mainstream media. The transgender community often gets misrepresented in the media (Dhiman 2023). One important source of concern is the possibility of tokenism or exploitation. These platforms must assure accurate depiction by incorporating transgender people in decision-making processes and providing them control over their own stories. It also confronts difficulties in attracting a large audience outside of the existing supporting group. While digital platforms have the potential for global reach, if not properly managed, algorithms and search engine optimisation can limit visibility. Efforts must be taken to promote varied content and guarantee that all users have equitable access.
