Netflix and the age of binge viewing

Before we had Netflix and other VODs viewers had no technological control, and little choice over content, this was known as the network era. The VCR and remote control were the beginning of multi channel viewing through cable and satellite

Subscriptions services are about attracting subscribers and keeping them on the platform, this is why there will be multiple niches targeted, personalised interfaces also contribute to the longevity it’s of peoples subscriptions. Netflix introduced non linear alternatives to watching, it also played a role in enabling viewers to use laptops and tablets as a television screen. Netflix pioneered the season dump instead of weekly viewing, this strategy really formalised emergent viewing process and binge watching culture.

Netflix began as an online mail oder dvd rental service in 1997, it had much cultural impact and changes since then, it completely dispenses of any likeness or relation to the tv set, Netflix carries out content dumping, providing large amounts of content for viewers to almost obsess over and view altogether. Netflix revived arrested development which was preciously dumped by NBC, the platform began to give hope and new found success to old tv programs that had been neglected by the audience during the tv age. Stranger things appeals to multiple audience through the references of the 1980s pop culture but also having younger cast, its is one of Netflix’s most viewed shows.

Netflix creates individualised viewing and self scheduling and eliminates the need for linear viewing, it removes the exclusivity of films shown in the cinema which would take 6 months to go onto dvd or blu ray, it becomes easier to see a movie faster after its release. Anybody can produce can relate to youtube, expertise is not relevant, production is more accessible to the general public.

Internet distribution improves quality of tv, challenges traditional media production through the library format. The subscriptions aren’t tied to a specific location like cable or satellite. Interface is important when appealing to customers and keeping subscriptions, exclusivity is important when promoting subscription. Interoperability: digital technologies “provided the opportunity to converge televisions, computers and other home technologies,” using the technology to converge different forms of viewership, for example using computer to create a movie to view on your phone. There’s us big connection to and from all forms of technology, everything is interconnected.
