Trans tv and modern representation

Representation through tv and media forms has always been criticised in the past for being inaccurate or lacking inclusivity. Many post modern tv shows and movies have taken a turn and a concept known as ‘trans tv’ has been popularised in the last two decades. An early example of this is the Wachowski’s sense 8, it explored provocative topics and dives into the reality of relationships, sex and gender. Trans tv is the idea that there’s a link between the new affordances of digital, internet distributed platforms and more transgressive and minority content on television. Race and sexuality have become focal points for many shows seen on netflix and other VODs originals.

The misrepresentation of groups that were already represented in the pts have alls new become overwritten with new ideologies for example new feminism and post feminisms television, which began to focus on the inner lives of women for example sex and the city and pen15, based around female friendships, careers etc. In the past many television series would focus on superficial representations of women for example the woman only being seen as a love interest or other stereotypical tropes being used to show her importance, the television industry now focuses on directing and narrating story lines for underrepresented groups such as the lgbtq community without making them a secondary focus. This transgressive concept can be seen through shows like Billions and Atypical where Non binary and non normative characters take the

Netflix challenged other distributors by pushing forward visibility for minority groups, gender, sexuality and non normative people, this began with shows like 13 reasons why which HBO responded to with Euphoria
which introduced and exposed queer identities and nor normativity through entertainment. Both these shows can be seen as a turning point for transgressive television.

Although there has been a lot of positive response to this new genre of tv some may argue that diversity is sometimes used as bait for viewers, advertisement may show people of colour or lgbt individuals to be important to the show however they become a comedic relief or irrelevant completely, many argue that these representations are superficial to attract larger audiences and is more of a money making scheme
