The connection between the post cinematic affect and the movie “The Big Short”

This week examines Steven Shaviro’s concept of The “post-film effect” with a screening of the film “The Big Short.” This is a 2015 American film, set against the backdrop of real events, mainly tells the story of a group of investors who began to profit from the collapse of the real estate market by buying subprime mortgage bonds and trading with large financial institutions during the financial crisis in 2007. Although the film uses a lot of complex financial terms and concepts, it uses some humorous and ironic techniques to package the side, which also makes the audience easier to understand when watching the film.

Since “The Big Short” mainly deals with economic and financial issues in an unconventional form, to some extent, the birth of this film will have some positive influences for the subsequent films:

  1. For the theme, In my opinion, this film successfully reveals the advent of the subprime loan bond crisis and its economic impact on society, which will bring inspiration to future films. More and more films will choose similar financial crisis as the theme and dig deeper into the problems of the financial system that may occur or occur. It can increase the audience’s attention for the economic issues in the real world.
  2. Shooting style: After watching this film, I found that it did not use the traditional narrative style to express what it wanted to express to the audience, but interpreted the theme of this film with a unique “ironic” technique and humorous style. Therefore, other films can adopt a similar approach to explain complex subjects in a humorous and light-hearted way, which not only better engages the audience, but also makes complex technical terms easy to understand in a simple form.
  3. Social feedback: By revealing the social, political and economic problems caused by the financial system, the film reflects some individual or institutional defects in the society at that time. Subsequent films can also adopt similar methods to gently comment on or reflect on problems that may arise in society.

Overalll, the audience’s evaluation of this film is mostly positive, no matter from the shooting subject or from the shooting method, it has provided a positive impact for the subsequent film.
