In the past, there has been a lack of understanding and awareness of trans and non-binary identities, and binary views have become ingrained, making it difficult for the media industry to challenge these norms. Networks and producers may be hesitant to cast transgender and non-binary characters out of concern that they might cause controversy or backlash among some viewers. Television networks and studios often make decisions based on perceived marketability and profitability. If there is a perception that a story featuring a trans or non-binary character might not appeal to a broad audience, it could impact decision-making. Over time, there is growing recognition of the importance of diverse representation in media. As awareness of the need for inclusive storytelling grows, recent years have witnessed a shift toward more realistic and nuanced depictions of trans and non-binary characters.
Netflix has played an important role in promoting trans and LGBTQ+ visibility. By producing and launching films and TV shows that address these themes, Netflix provides audiences with stories that are more diverse, inclusive, and reflective of real society. Sex Education is one example.
The actors or roles in this series are not just representatives of sexual minorities. It has made active attempts to explore sexual health and identity, trying to break stereotypes by showing Trans characters and LGBTQ+ characters delve into complex characters and provide more opportunities for expression for this community. It attempts to educate viewers about sexual health, identity, and gender issues, which facilitate to drive understanding and acceptance. This method of creation helps to create a more inclusive social atmosphere so that more people can understand and respect people with different gender identities and sexual orientations.
Visible: Out on Television (2020)
Disclosure (2020)
In 2020, Visible: Out on Television produced by Apple+ and Disclosure produced by Netflix, the two documentaries sort out the media’s presentation of sexual minorities and transgender people from the perspective of image history and explore a common theme: media (including movies, television, newspapers and even various social software) presenting specific images of sexual minorities and shape public perceptions of sexual minorities. Streaming platforms give underrepresented voices a chance to be heard. The ability to reach global audiences can increase visibility, challenge stereotypes, and promote more accurate representation of these communities. They have an extensive content library with tons of LGBTQ+ content. This includes not only narratives centered on the trans community, but also documentaries, series, and films that explore LGBTQ+ history, activism, and culture.
While streaming platforms have made significant progress, challenges remain. Critics argue that there is still a need for more authentic representation, avoid harmful stereotypes, and address issues such as “queerbaiting” (the use of LGBTQ+ themes to attract audiences without authentic representation).
All in all, “representation” is very important for the LGBTQ+ community, the streaming platform (Netflix) has played a key role in reshaping the television landscape, providing a platform for diverse voices, and promoting more inclusive representation of the trans community and broader LGBTQ+ narratives. However, we need to continue working to address the challenges and ensure these expressions are authentic, respectful, and empowering.
