How does Kxtty (@notyourabg) utilise Tik Tok to express her gender and cultural background?

Tik Tok is a short video social media platform that is primarily dominated by the younger generation (Alvermann, Wynne, Wright, 2022) and it is creative and energetic, which has lots of potential, as the algorithm can reach million views globally even if the account does not have many followers. For instance, Kxtty is frequently political as she seeks to alter or impact prevailing power dynamics” (Brough & Shresthova, 2012). In her profile, it is clear that she has been influenced by many cultures as her profile introduction clearly indicates her diversity with many flags on her profile. She successfully built her Tik Tok community with 823.9K followers for her unique representation of  femininity as her style is combined with many cultures(Alvermann, Wynne, Wright, 2022). For instance, she showcases how muslim style with veil on her hair and with asian makeup which normally have pale skin, the beauty standard in Asia.

In my opinion, the reason that she succeeded in the platform is because of the unique style of dressing and makeup that attract people’s attention. Below are her most popular videos which were pinned on her profile having millions of views. From the cover, the clothes she wears were unique which not often seen in public and she seems energetic in the video which I believe is the reason that her videos succeed.

One of her most popular videos, 5.2 M viewing, uses the text specifically talking to a group of community, which I believe is Hijabi women. This again indicated the specific culture she wants to demonstrate via the short video that further contribute to her successful personal brand, a brand which showcasing people’s uniqueness and further help building an online community.

Overall, she succeeded in intersecting her unique gender, female, and diverse cultural background, Muslim and Asian, to showcase in the Tik Tok platform.
