In “What is New Media?”(Chapter 1 of The Language of New Media, 2002), Lev Manovich explores the concept of new media, and he examines the nature of new media in the context of digital technology. Manovich’s central argument is that there are five key principles of new media.
Digitization: Digital encoding of media content
Modularity: New media consists of modular elements
Automation: Much of new media is automated, allowing content to be created, edited, and distributed with minimal human intervention.
Variable: New media are inherently variable, meaning the same media object can exist in multiple versions.
Interactivity: Viewers can actively participate in the content
Netflix is an iconic new media site.
Released in 2018, Black Mirror Bandersnatch is an interactive movie in the Black Mirror anthology series created by (Charlie Brooker). The film is notable for its interactive narrative in the form of new media. In this movie, the audience can make decisions that affect the direction of the narrative. As an example of interactive media, it is a prime example of how new media technologies are reshaping narrative form, audience engagement, and the moviegoing experience.
The film tells the story of Stefan Butler (played by Fionn Whitehead), a young programmer in the 1980s who adapts a self-selected adventure novel into a video game. As Stefan delves deeper into his work, he begins to question his own reality and struggles with his ability to make choices that blur the line between free will and control. The audience can make decisions for Stefan at different stages of the narrative, such as choosing which cereal he eats in the morning or deciding how he reacts to other characters. These choices lead to different narrative paths, resulting in multiple possible endings.
Audience rights are the focus and central element of Black Mirror Bandersnatch In a film or television program with a traditional linear narrative, the audience passively consumes the content. This movie allows the viewer to join in the shaping of the storyline. This is a revolutionary achievement in new media content
