CGI: The Rise of The New Norm

Post Cinema is where production, editing, distributing audio-visual material of the 21st century has seen the role of cinema having majority market dominance. This is through the rise of technology and platforms like streaming services such as Netflix, television and video games. These changes have forced cinema to adapt and change and  Post-cinema describes the new image and modes of engagement.

One form of Post-cinema that has seen the most improvement and use within the industry is the CGI which is more seen as simulation techniques than photographic. This is where equipment such as green screens, motion capture are used. CGI went through a massive growth as technology advanced where it has evolved with most films featuring it in the 21st century. The first example of a movie that relied purely on CGI was Avatar.

CGI seen in the modern day has become a easy for filmmakers to be more creative with their backdrops for scenes and has become more cost-effective and the films that has seen a mostly using this is the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) an example can be seen through Avengers: Endgame where most scenery showcased in the ‘last big fight’ consisted mostly of CGI edited with also Iron man , one of the main characters, suit was fully CGI generated. Films that feature a vast amount of CGI can use either digital footage to appear more realistic or diverge the constraints of realism.

This technique will likely still be used as it offers filmmakers more creativity and a new branch of CGI will appear which may come in the form of AI.CGI is one form of post cinema and showcases the new image it displays that differs from conventional cinema and CGI will continue to be used as technology evolves and it becomes even more efficient to use.
