Viewers having control over when they watch – Netflix

Netflix has been growing through the millions over the past ten years. People are loving the platform and the choice it gives them when watching TV. Because of Netflix people have started to binge watch. This means people can watch whatever TV show they want to watch when, and wherever they’d like to watch it. Shows such as House of cards and orange is the new black were the first of its kind when it comes to binge watching. Both of those shows when released, made it so you were able to watch the whole first season all at once without waiting another week.

Netflix gives the viewer full control on how many episodes they want to watch unlike regular programmed TV shows. As every show has all of the episodes preloaded, it gives you the opportunity to watch the whole season in 1 night or in a couple days. The platform gives the viewer so much more freedom than regular TV, which is a reason for its modern dominance over modern day TV. Jenner says “The metaphors [of addiction implied in the term binge] demonstrate the shift from something that is rationed temporarily (broadcast television) and which you must therefore get a fix form regularly, to something more like a box of chocolates which you purchase and consume in your own time” (Mareike Jenner, Pg 112, 2018). Jenner hits on the topic of binge perfectly by comparing it to owning a box of chocolates and being addicted to that one chocolate and eating them quickly. That can be compared exactly to you loving a tv show and being able to finish it all in one as to you maybe loving a tv show which is on regular tv and you’d only be able to have one chocolate a week.
