Post-Cinema Affect Analysis In Animation

With the new technological advancements of the digital equipment for recording, sound and editing, post-cinema era has drastically changed and shaped how films are interpreted and portrayed to convey strong meanings and emotions out of the consumer like never before.

One of those thing that have came out of post-cinema is called “Chaos Cinema” A term used for films characterized by rapid editing, sound design and a loss of spatial-awareness to actively engage the spectator towards the screen. However, although this is usually talked about on cinema, It is important to also point out that it has influenced the way animations are being elevated and influenced by this new change in cinemas as they go hand to hand in order to make the it more engaging to watch.

A good example of this would be the scene from Arcane in which the main character Vi goes through an extreme change after a breakup with her former captain and partner where she is banished back to her undercity and having to cope with this break-up as well as surviving through taking illegal underground betting fights. We can see the clear change both mentally and physically with her splashing black dye onto her hair and face to show change. This was accomplished with the use of fast rapid shots, shaky camera accompanied by the fast pace song in the background. One thing that I really liked was the way passing of time is represented as well to show this change in such short amount of time yet making it feel like it’s been a while through the POV shot of her in the ring against her opponent in which she is swaying around fighting the one guys and switching the opponent to another whilst maintaining this same moving POV. This is also applied when she knocks down her opponent where the moment her opponent is knocked on the ground it match cuts into other different opponents to show the passage of time. By doing this, it keeps the viewer engaged and rather doing a long redemption arc which may bore the viewers, they made it almost like a mini montage where it’s short and snappy to keep the spectator hooked.
