With the first analogue introduced in late 19 century, bothe cinema and television have undergone a huge shift to digital technology with the rapid advancements of society. In this day and age, anyone in different occupations or lifestyles can experience watching a film whether it’s in the cinema or home and experience different feelings, views of how they depict the story almost like magic. Despite this, there are still people who would argue that today’s state of cinema have indeed took a turn and lost some of it’s effect. However in this blog, there is one thing for certain is that digital technology has impacted the way the final product of the TV/film is produced and the way consumers consume the content.
The revolutionary of analogue and digital started around 1980s and 1990s which opened up new tools of composing films through CGI, digital editing and higher quality cameras. By gaining access to these, it has allowed directors to push the boundaries and imagination of what once considered a myth into reality. Things such as dystopian futuristic cities, flying cars that was once impossible to make to now a very capable task to accomplish through the technological advancements has allowed audiences to enjoy a new spectacle. A prime example of this would be the first release of Blade Runner (Ridely Scott, 1982) which stunned so many spectators of the film realising such world building can be accomplished thus engaging the audience like never before.
However, there has been arguments that the shift to digital specifically Rodwick who sees this era losing the authenticity of film as it was experienced way back since analogue cameras posses a physical connection to reality through its pure nature allowing it to capture frames through trace of light reflected from the physical world, creating a tangible link between the image and the moment it was captured. Whereas these days, digital are alternating the pure essence of the image which won’t give it the authentic pure emotional feeling. However on a personal scale, I would disagree as digital camera has opened more opportunities to make things that were once seen as fantasy to almost reality creating new sense of enjoyment/entertainment in which the analogue era couldn’t produce and relied on novels for heavy fictional plots.
