The Rise of Reaction Videos

YouTube has been around for sometime now and these day’s the new trend/algorithms for young teens for you pages usually consists of content creators reacting to certain topics/genre whether it’s popular movies, news or music to create entertainment and amusement towards their viewers. A good example of this would be youtubers such as Pewdiepie and KSI who both have a massive following on YouTube from their old content creation to now a reaction Youtuber through engaging in viral situations about news, drama, memes as well as blending their personality where they actively commentate and make it as entertaining as possible. This could sometimes include editing and engagement towards their audiences as well.

Pewdiepie was once known for his horror game playthroughs where he displayed an amusing personality when it came to playing horror games. Being one of the first Youtubers to do such content, many people tuned in and he eventually gathered a huge following from his absurd personality. Eventually his channel becomes a react channel where he asks and creates polls for his viewers to send memes for him to react on his reddit forum to try make him laugh. The layout of the video usually consists of just a camera pointing towards him and occasionally switching to a overlay where he is reacting the meme with the camera on the corner of the screen. By doing so, it makes the viewer feel somewhat engaged and connected almost as if we are watching it live with him (Reinhard & Dervin, 2019).

This is similarly applied to KSI, who once used to make parody’s which were heavily relatable and entertaining in which gathered a huge following to now a multi talent youtuber who focusses on things outside of Youtube such as his business, boxing and music. However on his second channel which is more active than his main account, he regularly posts reactions of memes whether of himself or the mainstream hype. His recent reaction is of him reacting to other youtubers/streamers making fun and memes of his own song in which he edits and makes an act of disbelief as well as defending his own song stating it was good in a way it wasn’t negative but rather funny/entertaining way. From being able to deliver and sway the momentum of how people interpret him, KSI still manages to make his fans watch and engage on his videos due to his joking personality which drives the success of reaction creators (Smith, 2020)
