TikTok has built a new form of sociality

Although social media such as TikTok and Instagram can be seen as a negative as it can cause doom scrolling and shorter attention spans. It causes creators to be more appealing to the audience and creative so that they can capture people to stay for longer than 30 seconds. TikTok is a place where people can be completely themselves and ‘construct their gender and cultural identities’ creating a new form of sociality. TikTok is comprised of so many different content creators and a lot of micro-creativity from people just posting for the fun of it, to people posting to spread a message and then also people that are there to provide fun and interesting content.

Most videos that show up on your TikTok for you page are algorithmically personalised to you and what you seem to like on the app just the same as streaming sites do, this is helpful for creating sociality as it will introduce you to many people with the same interests as you. These niche communities that can be found on TikTok through hashtag culture and interactive trends help people connect and branch outside of their box it’s a whole new world through their phone, therefore TikTok has built a new form of sociality through togetherness and being an inclusive app were once you find your community on there you will not be judged.
